02.09.11 | Toseland feels fighting fit at Nurburgring
BMW Motorrad Italia’s James Toseland has finished day one of the World Superbike race weekend at Germany’s Nurburgring in positive mood, after completing both sessions without any major problems with his recently recovered right wrist. The British rider is feeling back to full fitness following the championship summer break and finished the day’s two sessions as the second fastest BMW on track.
However, Toseland and the BMW Motorrad Italia team have significant work to do on the set-up of the S 1000 RR motorcycle ahead of tomorrow. Having seen the pace that factory BMW rider Troy Corser showed at this circuit last year, the BMW teams were expecting the home track to be well suited to the German machinery.
Today’s free practice and qualifying sessions have demonstrated a different reality with all four riders struggling to get the best from the machine. Toseland rounded out the day in 15th place, behind Leon Haslam in 10th but in front of factory rider Corser in 16th and team-mate Ayrton Badovini in 18th.
The Yorkshireman, who now lives on the Isle of Man, remains positive though and is confident that he can work with the team to get more from the BMW S 1000 RR as the weekend progresses.
“It’s great to be back on the bike and feel like I can ride properly after so much time spent trying to ride around my injury,” said Toseland. “The damage caused by the broken ones in my wrist was unlike anything I’d experienced and it was really frustrating that I felt okay and then as soon as I started riding the problem flared up again.
“Today has been a big step forward, so now we just need to get the bike to where we know it can be at this track. Hopefully, we can then look forward to a better race day than we’ve had for a while.”
