26.03.10 | Toseland back on top

Britains Double World Superbike Champion reminded the rest of the grid of his capabilities at Portimao today as he topped the timesheets in the first session of the day and finished just three tenths of a second off the pole time in session two.

The BKS-supported rider was focused on achieving a good set-set up for this weekends race after he struggled with chatter affecting the Yamaha at the opening round of the championship in Phillip Island, Australia.

After topping the leader board this morning, the Yorkshireman set out to complete a race run to put the Sterilgarda Yamaha through its paces ahead of tomorrows qualifying sessions and the race on Sunday.

With all eyes on Portimao as the first European round of the 2010 Superbike World Championship, Toseland is keen to prove that he still has what it takes to be a world champion by building up a consistently strong points tally.

Its been a great day, said James. Weve moved forward considerably from where we were in Philip Island and for that I would like to thank the Sterilgarda Yamaha team for all their efforts. The hard work test rider Alessandro Gramigni put in at Misano while I was nursing a broken bone in my left hand has given me a really strong package here at Portimao.

I pretty much completed a full race run on my last pit exit and at that point I was fastest in the session but I chose not to pit and take on board a new tyre for the glory of the fastest lap. I was quite pleased with my last session but we still have some work to do for tomorrow to ensure good results on Sunday.
