Sterilgarda Yamaha World Superbike rider James Toseland kick-started the New Year and his 2010 World Championship campaign last week with an official three-day test at Portimao in Portugal. Despite adverse weather conditions, James battled on through the elements to develop the new 2010 Yamaha World Superbike machine.
Portimao is one of the few circuits on the 2010 World Superbike calendar that James is less familiar with, so last week's test was the ideal platform to develop the Yorkshireman's understanding of the bike and the circuit before the season starts at Phillip Island on 28 February.
Day one was dry throughout and allowed the double World Superbike Champion to explore the limits of the new machine. James ended a productive first day with a lap time of 1:43.3, placing him a respectable fifth overall and providing a good base setting to work from on the bike.
Day two was interrupted by irregular rain showers causing ever changing track conditions. James used the unfavourable weather to develop a good wet setting and understand the new bike's characteristics. The Isle of Man resident posted a conservative time of 1:55.4, but was happy with the Yamaha's usability and balance.
Day three saw the track dry out by mid afternoon, allowing James and the team to pick up where they left off on Friday. The Sterilgarda Yamaha rider utilised the final day to try out some new settings on the bike, which enabled him to post a time of 1:43.1 - his fastest time of the weekend and a positive end to a productive three days.
There will be one more major pre-season test at Phillip Island on 21 and 22 February, shortly before the opening round of the championship at Phillip Island in Australia, on 28 February.
James said: "Overall it was a good three days. We had a lot to test on the new 2010 spec machine and I was really happy with the progress we made. Portimao is a unique track with lots of undulations and blind corners. It's the ideal place to test a new machine as it emphasises any problems with the bike and requires a perfect set-up. We've managed to gather a lot of important data to take away from the test and I'm confident that I can push for race wins when we return to Portimao on 28 March."
